Employment in Canada rose by 0.8%, or 150,000 jobs, in January, Statistics Canada reported today. Total employment was 20 million.

January’s employment growth was driven by full-time jobs, which rose 121,000, continuing an upward trend in total employment that began in September 2022.

The number of employees in the private sector rose by 0.9% or 115,000 in January, while public-sector employment rose by 0.8%, an addition of 32,000 jobs. The number of self-employed workers was little changed.

Canada’s unemployment rate held steady at 5.0%.

Among the provinces, Ontario led employment growth by adding 63,000 jobs in January, followed by Quebec, which added 47,000 jobs.
